Has the Fat Lady Sung?

Today's Associated Press story labeling Vivi an "urban legend" may be catchy, but is it true?

In this experienced Vivi watcher's estimation, mistaken sightings of the dog have less to do with an urge to romanticize the whippet's exploits, and more to do with the general public's woefully inadequate ability to identify different dog breeds.

(As my fellow dog-show fanatics would say, with an exasperated sigh, "Pet people!")

The smattering of Rego Park reports this fall, for example, can be attributed to one very unwhippety-looking Chihuahua.

Vivi sightings continue to trickle in, albeit not with the consistency that earmarked all the earlier, verified sightings that came to a standstill at summer's end.

Last night, for example, a woman on a bus returning from Thanksgiving dinner reported seeing a small white dog at the intersection of Linden Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue -- an intriguing location that is just south of the Interboro Parkway's terminus and the clot of ancient cemeteries where searchers thought Vivi might have taken refuge.

The East New York area has never been postered -- for reasons of more interest to sociologists than pet detectives.

Last Sunday, a man reported seeing a dog of Vivi's description between Cooper Avenue and 71st Street in Glendale.

Finally, there is the scenario mentioned in the AP story. To say that longtime searcher Rosa Chile regrets having made that information public would be a gross understatement.

As a general rule, this reporter has always maintained a policy of respecting the requests of Vivi searchers to not publish information -- either electronically or in print -- that could potentially jeopardize the  search.

Vivi searchers continue to follow up on all leads, and will communicate information via this blog once it has been verified, as happened with the "I've got her" call that turned out to have come from some prankster in Michigan.

Is Vivi gone? Maybe. But the first six months of frequent sightings, from Jamaica to Flushing to Glendale, were not the stuff of legend -- they were real, and a half-dozen excursions by tracking dogs said as much.

So I'm not quite ready to put Vivi in the category of terrorists masquerading as UPS men, or killer Swiffers, or whatever. Are you?

Comments

As for Vivi, she's no urban legend. Urban legends don't have a loyal band of followers and devoted searchers looking for them -- or people who love them.

This came into my e-mail from a group that does good work in the Central and South Jersey areas as well as Pennsylvania. I've posted it on another thread, but want to make sure as many people as possible see it. Please read it.
According to Jessica Blich, who does PR for the group, this special dog is in crisis and needs a good, loving home.

A Dog in Need...

...Needs a Home Indeed

By Jessica P. Blich, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

In the practice of animal rescue, we often come across animals that make our hearts break. Their pasts are just horrible, full of inhumane treatment and a lack of love. These animals leave imprints on us and make us remember why it is that we volunteer. Every once in so often, however, a Great Dane shows up at our rescue, the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, that really tugs at our heart strings. All breeds have medical problems and ailments that they are prone to, but some animals are just born "on the wrong foot," and will never wake up on the right one, so to say.

Such is the case with our Jamie. MAGDRL first came into contact with Jamie in October of this year. A frantic call from a former MAGDRL volunteer came in to notify us that this poor creature had been left at her veterinarian's office and if someone did not pick her up, she was to be euthanized at noon. I myself received one of these frantic phone calls and at over an hour away, thirty minutes past Jamie's deadline, I never had felt quite so helpless. Mass emails went out to our rescue group and finally, we were all assured by our coordinator that Jamie was in our care, in her foster home, and would be surviving well past noon.

So why did Jamie's family give her up? What did this poor doggie do to deserve to be out in the cold? Jamie has a medical problem that wreaks havoc on her digestive system. After over a month of tender care and a very risk biopsy procedure, the diagnosis was confirmed: Jamie has lymphagectasia. This disease of digestion is very rare, but makes it impossible for Jamie to digest fat. Fat, which is found in all dog foods, is the reason why Jamie was having uncontrollable accidents and excruciating pain. How could anyone suspect that dog food would make a dog so deathly ill?

Getting a confirmed diagnosis means hope for Jamie. It means that now she dines on chicken and rice. It means that now she can move toward health and happiness, living the Dane life she was born to lead. There is still something missing for Jamie, however. Her foster family has labored tirelessly and worried endlessly about what in the world could be plaguing this magnificent lady. Now that they know, they are relieved and are on top of every "trick" to try and make Jamie not only feel better, but gain some weight too. What they cannot give Jamie, though, is a forever home. Volunteers that provide foster homes for our rescued Danes are such a valuable commodity for MAGDRL. They enable us to rescue Danes and give them a place to call home until their forever family finds them. This place is a place of love, warmth, acceptance, and growth where these rescued Danes are able to learn how to socialize with people and animals and also to live in a house. Some of them have never lived indoors before!

Jamie is very special to us because she has been very touch and go from the moment we came into contact with her. Her health condition was scary, but now that it has been identified, Jamie is continuing to do better every day. MAGDRL is putting out a special request for a special family for Jamie. We are looking for someone or some family that will love her and take care of her special needs. Someone that will admire her and never turn her out in the cold. Someone who will understand that she has as much to give as any pet and so much more since Dane hearts are just that much bigger! This 4 year-old young gorgeous girl is waiting for happiness in a forever kind of way...are you waiting for her?

The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League (MAGDRL) is a non-profit 501(c)(3)organization for the benefit and rescue of neglected, abused, and abandoned Great Danes. We pride ourselves in kenneling as few Danes as we can; providing homes for them in our homes and training with our own pets and family members. This organization is run on donations alone and the care for just one Dane is quite expensive. For a special-needs Dane, like Jamie, extra funds are required. If you would like to make a contribution toward Jamie's expenses or toward our organizational efforts as a whole, please visit our website at www.magdrl-nj.com/dane-in-need.html. We thank you for taking the time to read about Jamie and our entire rescue efforts. For more information, please visit our website at www.magdrl-nj.com or call 973-334-1628.

I don't know about you guys but I checked some of the posts on the AOL "blog" and they are the most twisted things I've ever seen. I saw a couple references made to having had Vivi for dinner (not as a guest either)...we are TAME compared to some people out there! Come on Vivi! Come out, come out wherever you are!

Chrissy IM'ed me about that AOL homepage article and said some of the posts were mean. I said "meaner than us?" yup. Wow

Hey karen, I saw all the posts this afternoon and responded to one about the coyotes and JFK, it took all my strength to stop my fingers from getting on there about the moron and the dinner comments. Those blogs are ruthless, makes us look like angels with wings and halos on.

Thank you to everyone for all your generous contributions and the support you have shown us in our continued quest to find a lost dog in this BIG CITY!!!

Karen and I are still working on finding a different paper that will give us the same price (or better) as The Daily News did for a new ad...

Vivi made Yahoo! here:

Beware: if you go down to the bottom of the article and press the "

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving,
Tara

I took Bunny Rose up to Dr. Goldstein at Smith Ridge (Upper Westchester) today for a consult, and they were very interested in Vivi, they put a flyer up , I could mail them one of the "right side" pictures if I can get a hold of one. Maybe I can get one of my 3 printers working this weekend, I am major computer challenged

Wednesday evening, a man joined the blond woman in New Jersey for Thanksgiving. He was dressed in a blue plaid shirt and wore a baseball cap. He drives a pick up. They slept in a four poster bed made from maple and there's a braided rung on the floor. Vivi slept curled up in their bed.

The man wanted to take Vivi to the store but his young woman friend said no. I didn't meditate on Vivi for Thanksgiving, but I did notice today they were back in New York - Queens, and they both took Vivi for a walk along the water and held hands.

(I never know what my visions mean - and I do pick up on the sightings that come in. I do believe that ebony or black is playing a prominent role in where Vivi is - the woman wore a black dress and drives a black car etc.) God bless all.

Rug - sorry not rung!

Kathleen M-W, what a marvelous program for the seniors and their loved animals! What a positive and very helpful addition to the Meals on Wheels program. They are RIGHT ON!!

The following was posted today on prayers for pets for a bully lost on Thanksgiving. Let's keep her in out prayers. Philadelphia people may want to contact Michele.

Comments: while at my mother-in-laws house for thanksgivinig dinner last night, i went to the store for soda. when i returned the door was locked an another guest let me in. between my legs and out the door ran pudgy, a two year old pure bred english bulldog. no coller or anything... she is lost and we are all upset. we have posted signs all over the neighborhood, contacted the animal care and control unit, and the local police. any prayers to return her to her owner safely would greatly be apreciated. i have been praying to saint. anthony for a day and half now! thank you.

I am sorry I included the amount given by the generous people who donated money. I never meant to do this and I seem to be messing things up quite a bit lately. No matter how much anyone gives, it is a blessing and people do what they can do. Dollars add up and the next thing you know we have a classified ad!!

Hopefully we will get some return calls/emails tomorrow. Alot were out of the office all weekend. In the meantime we've got all this free media which literally buys us some time.

MADISON UPDATE:

November 26 - Happy Belated Thanksgiving
This entry was posted on Monday, November 27, 2006 1:18 AM and is filed under uncategorized.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving everyone!
We went to my husband's aunt's house for our Thanksgiving. The anticipation was very hard for me. I knew I would be with family and surrounded by love, but the last time a lot of the inlaws saw Madison, she was a little girl full of energy and life. Well, she's still full of life, but you know what I mean. My husband carried Madison through the front door where we were greeted by my mother in law. You all know what a wonderful woman she is from the comments she leaves on this site. I hugged her and didn't want to let go. The tears came even though I tried to hold them back. I know she felt my hurt, but her hug was the reassurance and strength I needed to walk into the house. Everyone was so happy to see us. The ones who had seen Madison were amazed at the progress. The ones who hadn't were still so happy to see how good she looks. At one point, Madison was laying on the bed where I changed her and suddenly she was surrounded by loved ones. Everyone was content to just hang out there watching Madison. It was a very good day.

Sometimes it's so easy to get caught up in the hurt and pain of the situation, but I have to remember that I also have a lot to be thankful for.

1. God, who let me keep my little girl and who is always in our lives, even when I get angry and turn my back.
2. My husband, who never once blamed me or even questioned how this could have happened. He loves me unconditionally
3. My family and friends and church, who have been my support since the day this happened.
4. My mother in law (who is my family too but deserves her own thanks), for being so loving and supportive. Connie, I love you like my own mom.
5. My daughter, for being such a fighter.

I have so much to be thankful for, but it all comes back to God. Thank you, God for all the blessings you bestow upon my family. Thank you for never turning your back on me. Thank you for Jesus!

A greyhound went missing from her home this Thanksgiving weekend. Below is a description of her miraculous (and very dangerous) recovery. Amazing what this person went through to get this dog back:

Hi everyone, After touring local neighborhoods all day yesterday and putting up posters, even last night, I was disheartened there were no sightings.

Then this morning at 8, AWLA called to say the police had been called about a greyhound spotted on 10th St, heading toward route 50 at 7:15. I printed more flyers and headed over to that neighborhood. Then AWLA called again that my dog was ON the entrance ramp of route 50 heading east toward Rosslyn.

I drove my car to route 50 eastbound, and saw every dog owner's nightmare--Serena, it was definitely Serena, running erratically down route 50 eastbound, with the rush hr traffic dodging her.

I was thinking "don't have an accident, don't have an accident!" watching cars in my rear view mirror as I followed her yelling "Come Serena!" out the window and tried to pull over 3 lanes when she suddenly veered south and it looked like she was leaving route 50. But then she veered north, crossed route 50 again, this time eastbound AND westbound (route 50 is just like route 84, for you in CT), so I crossed the 3 lanes of 50 east again in my car, and drove over the curb up onto the median (thank goodness for SUVs), all the while yelling "COME SERENA, BONE! COME SERENA BONE!" I realized if I got to the next exit, I'd lose sight of her.

Serena then crossed the route 50 service road and as she started to head down it into Rosslyn (urban neighborhood) I decided I'm NOT going to lose her this time, so I ditched my car in the median, flashers flashing, and (thanks for the prayers everyone) miraculously there was no west bound traffic at the moment so I raced across the 3 lanes of 50 westbound (thoughtful of all the "pedestrian crossing rte 50 was killed" news stories we have) and onto the service road.

By this time about 20 people had stopped their cars on route 50 in both directions, and the service road (we'd attracted quite a crowd), and gotten out of their cars to try to help. But to my dismay, Serena was gaining distance on me, even though I was running as fast as I could. Then a driver pulled over and said "want a ride to get that dog?" YES! So I leaped in and that kind woman veered through city streets in Rosslyn, following Serena. Then Serena crossed Ft Myer Drive (6 more lanes of busy traffic that intersect route 50) and her car couldn't follow so I leaped out and followed on foot. (Good thing I'm 6' ft tall, no one can miss me, crossing major roads, screaming and waving a leash.)

Serena had gone left into Rossyln and I lost her direction when a friend of Deb's suddenly appeared in front to me and said "I'm Deb's friend, Serena went that way!" and pointed. So we ran, but lost her again. Then a passerby said "she went that way!" and more people in another parking lot were all pointing in the same direction. (Meanwhile, I was still yelling "COME SERENA, BONE! COME SERENA BONE!" as I ran, but Serena was still ignoring me, totally freaked out, no doubt, but amazingly, running well, still.)

Then, it looked like hope--she'd run into an apartment complex parking lot around which the building formed a "U." There were about 6 men in uniform sweeping the parking lot and doing various maintenance things so I yelled "HELP ME GET THAT DOG!" They formed a line with me and we headed toward her--she'd be cornered in the entry way area of the complex. I could see her calculating which of us she could dart between, but as we slowed down, and I was still calling her, she seemed to remember her name and calm down a bit. Next she went back toward the wall of the complex, and climbed up on a grate, with me and the maintenance men closing in. She seemed to relax and put her head down, so still talking to her I took hold of her collar and put her leash on. SUCCESS. UNBELIEVABLE!

Then, of course, paranoid, I checked "collar really tight? leash really fastened? leash around hand and wrist?" and started walking back across Rossyln and down the service road to the car thinking "how am I going to retrieve my abandoned car safely from the median in this rush hour traffic?

As I walked back along the service road, everyone I'd run past earlier was cheering and talking: a woman in a car pulled over and said "so glad you got her, we called AWLA earlier!," a man delivering furniture said "So glad you got your dog!" Then Henry called so I was able to tell him "I got Serena, and miraculously, she's fine!" I think Henry posted this on the amber alert.

I then called Agnes of WAG in CT (I didn't have Joanne's [Serena's foster mom in CT] work phone) to tell her Serena was safe and to describe the unbelievable horror of seeing YOUR DOG dodging traffic in front of you on a major roadway. At least this area is full of dog lovers, and many cars had pulled over to try to help catch Serena. I think that sight caused all the oncoming traffic to slow down until they figured out what the problem was--"why were all those cars pulled over, stopped, so randomly?"

Some neighbors just stopped by with their dog to say, "we just saw your posters, we saw your dog on Pershing heading toward Glebe Road yesterday morning!" (opposite direction from where she was found). It sounds like Serena did about a 10 mile loop, in her 24 hrs loose, ending up on THE very busiest highway in my area. I wonder where she spent the night, it was cold for a greyhound.

Amazingly, Serena has no cuts, her feet are ok, she's not limping (and interestingly, she's following me room to room every single time I move now). I opened her crate door, and she went in to eat a treat, but now is on a dog bed in the dining room where I am.

Wow, what a chase. Thank goodness God was watching over all of them and no one (or Serena) was hurt. I cannot even imagine what this lady must have been feeling watching her baby in that traffic.

Thanks for the happy ending story Elizabeth. Wish we could have the same for Vivi soon.

A wonderful ending for Serena. Miracles do happen.

Wow! Elizabeth what a story, Thank God Serena is safe and home!
I just checked the link to the found whippet in PA, and my heart skipped a beat, She looks so much like Vivi. Does anyone know if she was found with the collar and tags that she is wearing in that picture ? and how did they find her? the link doesn't provide any info. I hope the family is located, and she is able to go home. Please keep us updated. Rosa

Just looked at the picture again, and I can't tell for sure if there are tags on her. I guess if there were they would have already contacted the owners.
Sorry for the stupid question.

Rosa, I too hesitated for second when looking at that whippet picture and thought "Oh, if that could only have been Vivi"

Unfortunately, the pattern on the right leg is different from Vivi.

WOW - wonderful story about Serena AND Madison - 'tis the season :)

I haven't been getting too much on the Vivi visions since Friday. I do "see" her being petted and loved. I thought Saturday that she might have been on a Ferry Boat with this man and woman; the couple were holding hands and Vivi leaning up against them. But I don't know, of course, if this is an image of "reality" or a symbol for a sighting etc.

She seems to be happy enough though - content - and loved. I do not see her anymore on the beach.

Pam, I think I almost passed out for a second, wouldn't it be great if Vivi just shows up one day like this little dog did. As I gave my little whippet Turkey this weekend all I could do was think of Vivi, and pray she was safe and her tummy was full.

Yes Rosa, it would be wonderful if she showed up like that. Hopefully sooner than later!!

Good news about Serena Beth. Good job!

Kathy at Bayside:

Are you running another ad, let me know so I can contribute.

Amazing story on Serena she had a guardian angel looking out for her. If route 50 is like our route 84 that is one lucky dog. Even people don't survive route 84 it's horrible driving on that.

JUST GOT THIS EMAIL FROM A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WHIPPET RESCUE PERSON ABOUT DODGE, THE LITTLE WHIPPET WHO WAS FOUND AFTER BEING HIT BY A CAR. HE'S DOING VERY WELL, ALTHOUGH HE'LL PROBABLY ALWAYS BE A LITTLE "CROOKED", HE'S READY TO GO TO A FOREVER HOME!
"I took Dodge in for his acupuncture treatment the other day. He bounces into the office as if to say "I'm here !". He apparently really likes it there. The gals at the counter greet him and he goes into the treatment room on his own, sets his crooked body on the mat, and stretched his front legs out in front of him. How cute. He enjoys the treatments. They clearly work.

The vet gave him the all clear to go to a forever home, and while I will miss him....I have been his foster, I look forward to hearing about how well he is doing and how much his new person loves him.
I know they will."

I couldn't stop thinking of Vivi over Thanksgiving and the days following. With all the press coverage, I was so hoping we'd have some news of her location.

Gibby the lost show whippet was found in Arizona
today. Yippeee! He spotted his mama, and ran as
fast as he could and knocked her over with kisses.
They were very worried since he had no access to
water in the desert.
Another happy ending !!

Fantastic! Two good endings today!! Will there be more?

Good news on Gibby Sue. It hurts to read of the lost dogs but so wonderful when one is found.

GREYT news on Gibby Sue - I have to agree - it is so hard to hear of the lost babies but so wonderful when they are found safe and reunited.

Re: JUST CHECKING ON LITTLE DODGE THE WHIPPET
(another email from Whippet Rescue in So. Calif)

"candle site? Tell me about it, or send me the link....and I will definitely tell him about you. He knows people have been rooting for him, I can just tell. He feels like a very special dog.
It has been no problem having him with my other dogs, it is something I have committed to doing, and I know he will get a special home.
I am taking him to Long Beach on the 1st to a dog show where he will be at the meet the breeds Whippet booth representing Whippet Rescue. He will LOVE the attention."
***************************************************
I sent her the candle site, thanks to Sharon for posting it all the time.I think Dodge could use some prayers! His little body will never be straight and I'm not sure how much longer he'll have to have acupuncture, but it could be for the rest of his life. Whippet rescue thinks the people who owned him, dumped him after he'd been hurt by a car. The gal said people do this all the time, they don't want to spend the money to help their dog.
Poor little boy.

SueG,thats really great! I'm glad he wasn't frightened and went to his mom!

He is a beautiful boy (Dodge) to have been done that way. So sad, how could people do that?

Another nice bit of news though, I got an e-mail from Debra Sacco last night. There is a lady who is coming to meet the 4 remaining dachshunds (all are looking adopted it seems), but Deb had a great feeling about her. She actually wanted to adopt two dachshunds.

Deb had just received an alert for two dachshunds who needed to be rescued. A rescue group offered to bring these to NJ if they could be placed. So they will be bringing these two to NJ it seems, and this lady may adopt these two together (sisters I believe).

So the 11 doxies may have now rescued two more. You go Deb - "weenie dogs" are our specialty now in honor of our "weenie crew" (hee, hee)!

Deb and Donna also went to visit Ann, and she seems to be doing fairly well. Sure hope when I am old I have some friends as kind as Deb and this group have been to Ann. God will bless each of you.

Oh, such a sweet story Kathleen. So happy about the little weenie dogs finding forever good homes. I pray we all live good and long lives to care for our many pets. Thank goodness we are so blessed to live in America where help is available.

Such good news today! I am so very excited to hear about Gibby and his wonderful rescue! And Dodge is doing so much better and is ready to be adopted into a forever home - Sweet boy deserves the best!
And the dramatic rescue that Beth posted on Serena! Wow, my heart was in my throat reading her post!
And two more doxies will have new homes - or I should say "weenie" dogs in honor of our special crew and group here on this blog.
AMAZING THINGS DO HAPPEN! NOW LETS GET SOME MORE WHIPPETS HOME!!!

Sharon and Betty Layne, would you be so kind to add the dogs and cats in South Korea to our prayer list?

Thank you.

The owners of Gibby hired Harry Oakes last week to come down and track Gibby.

Harry and his tracking dog followed the scent out to the middle of the road and said "Someone picked your dog up." End of search. Gibby was spotted two days ago outside a feed store eating out of the garbage and that is where they found him this morning as he returned to the same spot to eat.

Did someone ever have Gibby? Could be, but doubt it.
So much for Harry Oakes.......

Oh my - now that is a funny little tale. My Moses has lost a scent in the middle of the road - air currents or exhaust or something caused the difficulty - we picked it up again on the other side the road. But it was a strange sight to behold - tracking right to the middle - then poof gone.

P.S. I'm so very glad Gibby was found safe - probably never was caught.

I've had and seen some interesting things while tracking Moses and I can say that I'm not so quick to interpret what I find - not without locating the prey.

I think I did mention the difficulties surrounding a scent that goes into the middle of the road before and then vanishes. I think it might get over-ridden by exhaust or something - maybe even oil.

Also, I wanted to mention, that Moses, and I assume other tracking dogs, can follow the scent even in a car and start tracking down the middle of the road. Moses does this. So, I would just be suspicious of scent that goes "poof" - something else is happening. But that is my experieince with my dog that is not certified but in training. And if anyone wants to see a picture of him, e-mail me - he's about 90 lbs and looks like a huge Beagle.

Lindsey, thanks for the story on how Gibby was found.

Seems like Karin just came to a spot and said "Vivi probably died". Poof. Why is that any different?

I also wanted to mention that dogs backtrack - and sometimes trace over their steps - so it would appear that the scent stopped, but it really didn't - the dogs just retraced its steps.

Wolf packs don't make multiple tails - they back track sometimes in their exact steps - they also look like just one lone wolf by their tracks - and the truth is that the ones following the leader step in their exact tracks - so one never really knows how many there are.

Beth,

My point exactly. But I can only go by my experience - and again, Moses isn't certified and no one pays me. But it is real life experience of what occurs on tracking exercises in the city and in the forest too.

Not multiple tails - gads it's trails. I simply must proof read.

I seriously have my doubts about animal trackers after seeing so many different trackers here come up with so many different conclusions and so little real evidence. Disappointing. Although I guess it was always a long shot at best.

Beth

Karin did not just come to a spot in the road or cemetery or anywhere else and stop and say "Vivi probably died". Once again you are twisting and over simplifying just to suit your own need to start an argument on the list and get some attention.

Karen went to several places after Mt. Hebron scent seemed to have her dog wanting to go under a fence to the hwy. She also used two dogs to confirm things. At the end of her report it was one of the scenarios she used.

She at least sent a report and worked on getting loads of publicity for this dog. Harry did none of this, all we got from him was a GFY.

Yeah, it is difficult. I think a tracker needs days to search. And also, some animals hide and don't move about - and some are in houses - dognapped by a neighbor or something.

But an animal that roams and is free feeding, you need a pack of dogs chasing it down and cornering it - that's why dogs tree their prey - otherwise the creatures just keep going. Bears tree, cougars, etc., but not dogs - not in their nature to be treed or even cornered.

Also, Vivi moved in the middle of the night often - when traffic was light.

I think we paid for a bunch of "best" guessers. We could have guessed as good.

Once again Beth, oversimplifying or bad memory. Harry is the only one that came up with a different scenario in the Vivi search.

And if he is so good, why did he not just go across the road in the middle of nowhere (in the Gibby search) and see if the scent picked up again. Obviously no one had this dog. There are reports of how he was found on the whippet lists, and he did not even want to come to the voice of the husband, kept turning away and walking off again, but when he heard the wife's voice, he immediately turned and bolted full speed ahead right to her. Do you think as Harry suggested, some stranger would have gotten this dog? Think about this also in the Vivi search.

If you read Goin's report, she also consulted with Sam and Laura who were in NY earlier for the Vivi search and their findings agreed with one another.

Harry, once again, only gave us a GFY. How much more do you want to defend him--he was absolutely no help in the Gibby search either. But then you only want to stir up argument, not admit reality. Did you read any kudos for him on any of the whippet lists? No you could not have, because there were not any. But here we go again with more argument from you.

I must have missed it - Beth were you defending Harry?

Good Old Harry duped another innocent whippet owner

Well, it's a sad commentary that's for sure.

So happy to hear the good news about Gibby and Serena. Sometimes things happen in 3's so let's keep praying that it will be Vivi's turn next. I too, no longer have the confidence in trackers that I once did. That goes for ALL of them.

Libby, can you direct me to a whippet list I would like to read more about Gibby

I wanted to train Moses to find the elderly that SAR teams don't look for - those that wander away from their homes.

Tracking pets is a different deal - in many ways harder.

Marther! Hi hi hi! ( 0:

Ruby Shoes, how's the weather?

Martha, the website is http://groups.msn.com/WhippetWorld

Its a great site, with lots of info.
Another good website if anyone has " dog collar"
addictions like i do
is Furrybabyfashions.com Great collars, great
prices

The one I am on you have to join. Here is the website to go to:

http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/

Then you have to click on Online List Archive, and you will get a list of lists!! Scroll down to the Whippet-L list. You have to join the list to read and receive emails. It is a pretty high volume list.

Here's one I know about on Yahoo, but don't belong to it. I would imagine you have to join.

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Whippet/

I'm hoping good things happen in three's - and we will have good news of where Vivi is soon.

MARTHA: this might be the same one:

WhippetWorld@groups.msn.com Click on message boards and it's the 8th one down.

Hi Martha! Looks like you'll have some reading material to keep you busy for awhile!!

Libby, I'm not trying to start an argument. You, as usual, are.

How did the owner know where to go to look for Gibby? Did someone call in a sighting and he just happened to still be there by the time they arrived?

I think he was eating out of a trash bin/can and sighted and the dog returned too it.

Sad to say, but none of the trackers were that helpful. We liked some more than others or respected their tracking/searching methods more etc., but our little gal was just out too long and traveled the paths so often, it made locating her nearly impossible.

If that's the case the owners got very lucky.

Also, and not to bring up a sensitive topic, but I do believe that Harry had conducted a different type of search, checking out our own New York foot soldiers etc., right or wrong, and his focus was just different. But I'd still like to know why this Highland Park area was mentioned and so often too?

Gail,

There is a women that owns a feed business there that saw Gibby yesterday eating the cat food. Gibby came back this morning and the lady called the owner

Gibby was so lucky. I wish something good like that would happen for our little Vivi.

Thank you Marty. It's luck that he went back to the same place. Vivi seems to move on after her meals.

With all the news media about Vivi lately, we expect to hear something positive - it just seems so odd that we haven't got some interesting leads on this and some that pan out - even an update on the scared tipster.

If Vivi is caught, it would be great to have an ID where someone looks at Vivi's photo and goes yes, that's the dog I saw (see) etc.

I think tracking dogs are helpful, but I think the problem is when people sometimes expect too much from them. They can play an important role in a search to help confirm sightings. In the past there were times when Vivi seemed to be staying in a general area for a week or two and a cluster of sightings came in. I believe Laura and Sam's dogs came to NY quite a few times to help confirm those sightings. In most cases I think that's the most they can really do. I think the problem is when expectations are that the tracking dogs can actually track her down and find her. I think tracking dogs are a tool that can be used with all the other elements used to find a lost dog, but alone they're not the answer.

As usual, your facts are wrong. Gibby turned and ran to his owner, Mary.....not Bob's wife.

AND......Deb feels Gibby WAS taken and put back out there. I'm not even going to explain. You people have solved this one as well, according to your misinformation.

Furthermore, re: all the e-mails and their nasty content sent to Deb.....she finds them and you all very distasteful.

Bottom line....Gibby is safe and in the arms of his mom. EVERYONE worked together, as a team, to help this little dog and his owner & breeder. Amazing. Everyone...together...in harmony. Worked like a charm. The focus was on Gibby.

Thanks, Terri. It's nice to know someone on this list actually cares about getting the true information out there. Oh, forgive me, I must be trying to get attention again. Your turn, Libby . . . .

Regardless of how Gibby got home or what happened, the important thing is that this poor animal is safe again.

Can we not forget about all the hostility and just focus on this good please - everyone? And also focus on getting Vivi home in this same way.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful update on sweet Gibby.

Hard to imagine that someone would catch a dog and then just let it loose again. Just difficult to visualize - unless, of course, we have that illusive peice of string etc.

Who would send nasty e-mails to Deb and to what purpose? This is confuing.

I don't care who Gibby ran to. The important thing is that the dog is now safe and that is wonderful for all concerned.

Amen to what's important. So glad Gibby is safe and now I'm waiting for the "three" in the good luck run with a first Name to include the words "VIVI".

In case anyone wanted to know Vivi was in the NY Daily News again today. The section that says your neighborhood Long Island.

Thanks Debbie.

Gibby's Rescue Story from WhippetWorld:

Mon Nov 27, 2006 10:55 am
GIBBY IS FOUND!!!!!!!!!

He is thin and limping a little but otherwise appears to be fine and when Bobby
called me Gibs was lying quietly on the back seat of the truck, not asleep but
his eyes were closed as if he was just tired of facing the world!

I don't know many details but as of about 7:30 AM Arizona time they had him!

About an hour earlier the woman at the feed store saw him in the woods and
called immediately saying she was sure it was Gibs, so Bobby left in the truck
on the frontage road to head him off from going onto the freeway or RR tracks,
and Mary took off on foot.

He saw Gibby alongside the road - Gibby saw Bobby and he stopped then turned and
started to go away, Bobby got out of the truck and dropped to the ground crying
and calling his name - he stopped but again he turned away.....then he heard
Mary's voice and took off full speed towards her and plowed right into her
knocking her over!!!!!!!

The boy is sure happy to be found!!!

So they'll go around the countryside this morning and clean up that part of
Arizona (we figure they've posted hundreds of signs which really need to be
taken down), then they'll head home.....I'll make a vet appointment for later
today to have him checked out.

The sense of relief is simply overwhelming and I'd have gotten this written much
faster had I been able to type and not cry.....they're tears of joy but still -
we all just feel wrung out, this ordeal has been an exhausting nightmare but
thank God the ending is a happy one!

I'll try to post later on with a proper thank you and details if anyone wants to
read it, but for now I send a gazillion hugs of THANKS for the prayers and
support and everything you have all done for us! the calls and emails from
around the world have helped keep me going forward thinking positive and from
totally losing my mind.

((((((((((((((((((((YOU))))))))))))))))))))))
more later but for now - Bobby Mary Gibby and I all send love and THANK YOU!!!

Deb

PLEASE CROSS POST to all the other lists since people with so many other breeds
have called and written offering prayers and help.....the dear souls in this dog
world are pretty amazing!!!

Deb Martino
Kokopelli Whippets

Terri: This is a paste from your prior post:
Furthermore, re: all the e-mails and their nasty content sent to Deb.....she finds them and you all very distasteful.

You mentioned that all the e-mails and their nasty comments sent to Deb - we're you implying that some of them came from the bloggers here - or that just Deb received them from other people? I can hardly imagine that anyone here would have sent Deb a nasty e-mail about her lost Whippet, but also wondered why you included it here?

Somehow, I can imagine nasty emails coming from people on this blog. I am very glad this puppy is home. They got very very lucky in this instance. Unusual with a sighthound.

I know some of the bloggers have had their moments, and me too, I admit, but most of them if not all of them really love animals and their hearts truly ache for the missing and lost animals. So, it just seems odd that Deb would receive nasty e-mails over this poor lost dog.

Good point, Sedona. I can hardly believe that Deb is saying all of us are distasteful. I have never had the pleasure of meeting more animal loving and caring individuals than I have right here on this blog. Perhaps you misunderstood Deb's meaning, Terri and Beth? Who here would say awful things to them about their precious missing whippet?

I guess it seems difficult to comprehend just as much as it does someone letting a dog loose once it is captured. But maybe a person is just too busy or tired or weary and thinks, might as well turn it loose again. And I do believe that Denise Flaim didn't want us typing the go find yourself initials.

This is so true Sedona. I do not believe anyone on this blog would send this lady nasty e-mails and upset her while she is distraught about her baby being missing.

I believe I know the people on this blog a lot better than that. They are kind and compassionate people who care when people are hurting, I have found this out myself with their kindnesses regarding Madison, Sparky, Mom, Tinkerbell and myself.

No matter what anyone may think of someone on this blog, each of these people sought out a little dog they had never even met, loved her, prayed for her, worked hard for her, and gave generously to help her in many ways (not just in money, but in one's own way).

I will never believe anyone on this blog to have anything but a very good heart - they loved this little creature too much for me to think otherwise.

I did e-mail Deb through her website and apologized if anyone had said anything offensive to her, and let her know I was glad Gibby was home safe and that Gibby had been in our hearts and prayers.

If you have not looked at her website, it is very nice. You can certainly see her love for these babies. She also is a musician, a flutist, so she has to be a good person for sure! You all know how I love those musicians!

We are all ecstatic that Gibby is back with his family and is not injured. Bless that little whippet boy!!!

Any news on Vivi?

Oh, Thank you Kathleen for thinking so kindly to e-mail Deb. You are so very thoughtful.

I just can't imagine anyone here sending Deb a nasty e-mail. I know some don't like my visions but when it comes to loving and caring for animals, this group is the best - in fact it is better than the best - it is the finest!

I can't help and reflect on the post @5:18 about "TRUE INFORMATION", I thought about it, and the first thing that came to mind was VIVI, that is all we ever wanted was "TRUE INFORMATION" RE: VIVI's case. Will we ever really know anything? was there or is there an ON going investigation? was there anyone really suspected? and if so why n
